Investment trusts can be a way round the problem.
Investment trusts have a professional fund manager buying shares in a range of companies, thus spreading the risk. And they generally have lower charges than unit trusts.

Notification about the Framlington Income and Capital Trust Plc At the Extraordinary General Meeting of September 30th 2008, the proposals regarding reconstruction and voluntary windup of Framlington Income & Capital Trust (please see below) were approved by the Company's shareholders.
The Company therefore went into voluntary liquidation with immediate effect.
Contract notes for shareholders who elected to roll over their investments will be sent on, or as soon as practicable after, 1 October.
Distribution of cash entitlements to Shareholders who elected for the Cash Option under the Scheme will be made week commencing 6 October.
